(AB) ABLE SEAMAN’S DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ON THE SHIP

Hello friends! Today I would like to introduce to you the Able Sea man's duties and responsibilities on the ship:

      

Able Sea man's duties and responsibilities

      A)   Performs bridge and port watch; helps at deck maintenance and repairs; checks fresh watch and ballast watch tank soundings, hatch covers and deck cargo lashings;

  

B)   Monitor replenishment of watch tanks by recording their levels;

C)   Delegate to deck crewmembers the various tasks assigned by the Chief Officer;

D)   Measures and records the bilge of compartments under the pumping operator’s responsibility and reports the same to the Chief Officer;

E)   Perform ballasting and deballasting operations as instructed by the Chief Officer;

F)    Perform maintenance, cargo handling and mooring work upon instruction of the Boatswain;

G)   Manage ship’s store when instructed by the Boatswain;

H)   Perform carpentry and cementing work;

I)     Perform navigational watchkeeping and gangway watch; perform the duties of a lookout and helmsman;

J)    Keep the bridge and the gangway clean, obey the orders of the deck officer in charge when carrying out maintenance work or when using navigational equipment, accessories in rescue boat, life-saving appliances, pilot ladder, steering gear and other bridge accessories;

K)   Guide the Ordinary Seamen;
